Frequently Asked Questions
What is sport psychology ?
Sports psychology trains the mind to be a force multiplier for the physical performance. Just like your physical conditioning helps you become faster and stronger similarly mental conditioning helps you become mentally tougher.
Do you communicate with coaches/parents ?
Yes, we regularly communicate with coaches and parents. However, this is done only with the athlete's consent.
What is the difference between sport psychology and mainstream psychology?
A sport psychologist does not work with mentally ill individuals or prescribe medication but they help individuals deal with challenges, problems, coping with pressure, help them become more confident, help improve focus and motivate them to train and work harder to achieve excellence. Going to a sport psychologist does not mean an athlete is weak but it means that he/she is aware of the important role of mental training in becoming a champion.
Can I seek your services if I do not live in Pune, Mumbai or Bangalore?
Yes, we work with athletes who are not based in Pune, Mumbai or Bangalore. We conduct sessions with athletes on the telephone or video calls, and use email to provide you with your psychological training plan. We do encourage athletes to meet us if they visit Pune, Mumbai and Bangalore and also inform them if we are traveling to their cities.
What exactly does a sport psychologist help with ?
Many athletes and coaches realise the importance of the mental aspect in sport. Our first goal is to assess and profile the individual which allows us to support them with a psychological skills training program to enhance performance.
What kind of results can the typical athlete who receives sport psychology services expect to see?
Some of the expected outcomes include increase in motivation and confidence; enhance concentration and focus, effective handling of anxiety and pressure, and better performances.
What are some of the reasons that athletes seek sport psychology services?
Some of the most common reasons why athletes approach us are: stress, anxiety and pre-competition anxiety, lapses in concentration and motivation, controlling emotions, anger management, coping with injuries and setbacks, career transitions and goal accomplishment. However we recommend athletes, coaches and parents to seek services as a part of their build up to becoming a world class athlete.
Why should I work with you for my sport psychology needs?
We at Samiksha use western psychological techniques in conjunction with Indian psychology which has delivered effective results. We do not believe in the "one size fits all" kind of approach to psychological skills training and therefore design a customised program for individual athletes or teams depending on their needs.
What can both my child and I hope to gain by working with a sport psychologist ?
Sport psychology training can help sports parents and children to develop skills necessary for sport performance at an elite level and also for their holistic development. It will teach you necessary skills such as effective communication for the development of your child.
